How Shopping and Donating at CommunityAid Helps the Environment

We talk a lot about the community impact of what we do here at CommunityAid. The jobs we create, the nonprofits we fund, the neighbors we serve. But there's another part of our story that doesn't get nearly enough attention, and it's one we're genuinely proud of. Every time someone donates a bag of clothes or walks out of one of our stores with a great find, they're also doing something really meaningful for the environment. Pretty cool, right? Let us explain.

The Textile Waste Problem Is Bigger Than You Think

Here's something that might surprise you. The average American generates about 82 pounds of textile waste every year, and 85 percent of it ends up in landfills or incinerators, even though 95 percent of it could be reused or recycled. The EPA reported that landfills received 11.3 million tons of textile waste in a single year, making up nearly 8 percent of all municipal solid waste. These aren't just numbers. They represent mountains of clothing, shoes, and household goods that had plenty of life left in them.

That's exactly where we come in.

Every Donation Keeps Items Out of Landfills

When you bring your gently used goods to one of our seven Central Pennsylvania stores or drop them in one of our 200+ donation bins, you're directly diverting those items from the waste stream. Our donation tagline says it best: "Reduce Waste. Create Opportunity." That's not just a catchy phrase. It's literally what happens every single day. Every item that comes through our donation door and finds its way onto our sales floor is one more item that didn't end up in a landfill.

And we work really hard to keep as many items in circulation as possible. Environmental consciousness is woven into everything we do, including recycling programs for items that can't be sold on the floor. Textiles too damaged for resale find new life through our recycling partnerships, and metal, paper, and plastic get diverted from landfills wherever possible. We're genuinely committed to minimizing waste at every step of the process.

Shopping Secondhand is One of the Most Sustainable Choices You Can Make

Think about it this way. When you buy something at CommunityAid instead of buying it new, you're not just saving money. You're reducing the demand for brand new production. Manufacturing new clothing and goods takes enormous amounts of energy, water, and raw materials. Choosing secondhand breaks that cycle entirely. You're giving an item a second life, which means no new resources had to be used to put that item in your hands.

A Quick Note About Proper Donations

We want to be upfront about something, because it really does matter for the environment. Items left outside of bins or stores instead of being placed properly inside are a problem that works against everything we're trying to do. In 2020, we spent $260,000 on trash removal from improperly left donations. That translated to an estimated 500,000 pounds of donated goods that had to go to the landfill because weather, animals, or contamination made them unsaleable. That's about 18 full dump trucks of waste that didn't have to happen.

We've worked hard since then to make proper donating easier and more convenient. With over 200 bins throughout Central PA and seven store donation centers open Monday through Saturday, there's always a good option close to you. Donating properly is the difference between your items helping a neighbor and your items ending up exactly where you didn't intend for them to go.

You're Part of a Growing Movement

The good news is that more and more people are catching on, and we're seeing it in our stores every day. Interest in sustainability is one of the biggest reasons the resale industry has been growing so steadily. People are turning on to the idea of making greener choices, and they're realizing that thrifted items are often brand new or barely worn. No sacrifice in quality required. You can look great, spend less, and feel good about your environmental footprint all at the same time. That's a pretty great deal.

In a world full of fast fashion and disposable goods, shopping and donating with us is a small but meaningful way of saying that quality items deserve a longer life. And that's something we can all feel good about.

Shop and Donate With Purpose

At CommunityAid, you can shop knowing your purchase is fairly priced, encourages sustainability, and strengthens our local communities. That's a promise we take seriously. Whether you're dropping off a bag of clothes, browsing our shelves for something great, or rounding up your total at the register, every single action adds up.

Here's one of our favorite facts: 99 percent of everything on our sales floor came through the donation door. Our entire store, every shelf, every rack, every bin, exists because neighbors chose to give instead of throw away. That's a community effort and an environmental one too.

So the next time you're clearing out your closet or on the hunt for something new, we hope you'll think of us. Come shop. Come donate. And know that what you're doing is good for your wallet, good for your neighbors, and good for the planet.

We'll see you soon. πŸ’š
